Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients more than 40 years of age with ischemic stroke 2. Requiring more than 2 days of mechanical ventilation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients on dialysis or having congestive heart failure or hepatic dysfunction. 2. Patient having chest drain or leaks in the endotracheal tube as they will provide inappropriate end-tidal carbon dioxide values leading to erroneous VO2 and VCO2 calculations.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To calculate the energy requirements in ischemic stroke patients with the help of indirect calorimetry (IC) To compare the patient outcome, based on nutritional supplementation by indirect calorimetry versus the standard single weight-based energy targeted formulaTimepoint: The energy requirement will be calculated till the patient is at ICU and receiving enteral nutrition. The outcome of the patient will be calculated at the time of discharge from ICU.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To assess the length of mechanical ventilation, duration of ICU and hospital stay, ICU mortality, and infectious complicationsTimepoint: At the time of discharge from ICU/hospital
