Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Critically ill patients admitted to ICU AGE LIMIT: 18 years and above

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with documented hypomagnesemia / hypermagnesemia before admission to ICU -Patients with previous magnesium supplementation -Mortality within 24 hours of admission to ICU -Critically ill patients in ICU in whom day 1 of serum magnesium testing is missed .

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To study the incidence of hypomagnesemia and hypermagnesemia and to correlate serum magnesium levels at admission with mortality in critically ill patients in the ICU .Timepoint: 18 months

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To correlate serum magnesium levels with length of ICU stay, need and duration of mechanical ventilation, other electrolyte abnormalities and biochemical parameters and co-morbid conditions in critically ill patients .Timepoint: 18 months
