Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Adult patients presenting with vital teeth with a deep carious lesion radiographically reaching close to the pulp (inner quarter of dentine i.e. >75%) will be asked to participate. The tooth must not hurt spontaneously before treatment is initiated (Ricucci et al., 2014). Mild symptoms of thermal sensitivity to cold stimuli when provoked will be included.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Patients with systemic disease and/or spontaneous pain emanating from the tooth. - Pulpal signs indicate irreversible pulpitis i.e. bleeding cannot be stopped (Matsuo et al., 1994) after 1 min or there is visible pus in the exposed pulp space. - Lack of availability for follow up (e.g. moving away) - Periodontal probing > 5 mm on tooth in question.
