Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patient present for elective abdominal or thoracic surgery under general anesthesia 2. American Society of Anaesthesiologists physical status (ASA) physical status Iâ??III

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. The patientâ??s guardians who refused for Informed consent 2. History of spine surgery 3. Known spinal deformity 4. Coagulation disorder 5. Preexisting infection at the local site 6. Allergy to Local anaesthetic drugs

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome measure will be the procedure time (from skin puncture by epidural needle to identification of epidural space by LOR to air) for successful epidural placement in comparison to traditional landmark-based technique.Timepoint: At the time of epidural needle placement

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. the number of needle redirections required, 2. number of attempts as measured by needle reinsertions, 3. procedure related complications(dura puncture, bloody tap) 4. Success â?? visualizing the displacement of posterior dura while injecting local anaesthetic on USG in both groups 5. Ease of catheter insertion Timepoint: At the time of epidural needle placement
