Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age 18-75 years 2. ASA I and II 3. All patients of esophagus cancer (squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma) of the middle or lower third of esophagus, undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by transthoracic McEwans or Ivor lewis esophagectomy. 4. Patients giving written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Contraindications to perform CPET a. Unstable cardiac status (Acute myocardial infarction 3â??5 days, unstable angina, moderate stenotic valvular heart disease, uncontrolled arrhythmias, syncope, active endocarditis, acute myocarditis or pericarditis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, uncontrolled heart failure) b. Significant pulmonary hypertension c. Acute pulmonary embolus or pulmonary infarction d. Electrolyte abnormalities e. Thrombosis of lower extremities f. Orthopedic impairment that compromises exercise performance g. Uncontrolled asthma h. Pulmonary oedema i. Room air desaturation at rest j. Respiratory failure k. Acute noncardiopulmonary disorder that may affect exercise performance or be aggravated by exercise(i.e. infection, renal failure, thyrotoxicosis) l. Mental impairment leading to inability to cooperate 2. Pregnant patients 3. Emergency surgery

1. To Study the correlation between CPET variables and post operative morbidity in patients with esophagus cancer undergoing neo-adjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery.Timepoint: post operative morbidity survery (POMS) to be done on day 3, 5, 7 postop

MeasureTime frame
1. To compare pre-chemotherapy and post chemotherapy CPET variables and their association with post operative outcome. 2. To look for association between CPET variables and length of hospital stay. 3. To look for association between CPET variables and 30 day mortality. Timepoint: mortality at 30 days
