Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Biopsy-proven, primary, low rectal cancer of histology adenocarcinoma and no previous therapy for rectal cancer, Patient consenting. No organ failure

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patient not consenting, Current pregnancy, Previous pelvic/rectal malignancy, Previous pelvic radiotherapy, Previous pelvic surgeries especially for fecal incontinence or prolapse. General MRI contraindications -- Pregnancy, Implanted metal devices, Pacemakers, Cochlear implants, Artificial cardiac valves, Claustrophobia or cardio-pulmonary dysfunction patients who are unable to tolerate a MRI.

To validate high resolution MRI staging system in lower rectal cancer by defining the tumor-mesorectal fascia relation-ship and to guide the treatment planningTimepoint: 18 months

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Analysis of different clinical and radiological factors involving the decision making by surgeons to carry out Anterior Resections, Abdomino-perineal resections or extralevator abdomino-perineal resection. Timepoint: 18 months;Comparison of MRI imaging and pathology staging assessment between different types of surgical approaches. Timepoint: 18 months;Evaluation of potential associations between imaging and pathology assessment of radial and distal margins, neo-adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, perineal complications and sphincter preservation ratesTimepoint: 18 months
