Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1.Patients belonging to either sex between 20 to 60 years of age. 2.Patients with ASA physical status 1 & 2. 3.Patients with Glasgow coma scale 15. 4.Patients undergoing elective craniotomy under general anaesthesia for supratentorial tumours.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Patients refusal to give consent. 2.Patients with significant cardiovascular,pulmonary,renal,hepatic,endocrine or muscular disorders. 3.Patients having tumours with midline shift. 4.Patients allergic to any anaesthetic drug. 5.Patients having surgery related complications like vascular injury,massive intraoperative bleeding or injury to vital structures necessitating elective post operative mechanical ventilation. 6.Patients exposed to general anaesthesia in preceeding 7 days before the study.

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1.To compare the changes in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure from baseline. 2.To compare the effects of desflurane and isoflurane on intraoperative degree of dural tension and brain swelling.Timepoint: 1.Recorded every 5 minutes until the dura is opened. 2.Assessed at the time of dural opening.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To compare intraoperative and postoperative haemodynamics.Timepoint: Recorded every 5 minutes until the dura is opened and thereafter every 15 minutes uptil 1 hour postoperatively.;To compare postoperative recovery including emergence and extubation time.Timepoint: At the end of the operation.;To compare time taken to reach an Aldrete Score more than or equal to 9.Timepoint: After the patient is extubated and shifted to the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit.
