Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: a)Patients in the age group of 20-70 years b)Patients having no evidence of interproximal attach¬ment loss, probing pocket depth (PPD) of =3 mm at any sites on any teeth, and whole-mouth bleeding scores of =10% will serve as controls. c)Patients with chronic generalized periodontitis having at least two or more inter¬proximal sites with an attachment loss of =4 mm, or two or more interproximal sites with PPDs of =5 mm, not on the same tooth. It will be ensured that the total number of teeth in the mouth will be =20.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a)A course of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or antimicrobial drugs within a 3-month period before the commencement of study b)Pregnancy or lactating mothers c)Use of mouthwashes or vitamin supplements within the previous 3 months d)Patients with other systemic conditions that could affect the results like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic lung diseases etc.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. Metallothionein(MT) levels in serum, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid 2. MT-mRNA expression in gingival tissuesTimepoint: At baseline only in periodontally healthy individuals and at baseline and after 3 months of nonsurgical periodontal therapy in chronic periodontitis patients

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Probing depth (PD), Clinical attachment level (CAL), Gingival Index (Löe and Sillness), Sulcular bleeding index (Muhlemann and Son), Plaque index (Silness and Löe)Timepoint: At baseline only in periodontally healthy individuals and at baseline and after 3 months of nonsurgical periodontal therapy in chronic periodontitis patients
