Intervention1: Ultrasonic scaling of teeth: Non surgical periodontal therapy includes scaling of teeth with ultrasonic scaler. Scaling was performed once at baseline. Duration of scaling was 30 minute

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: At least 20 functional teeth present. Inclusion criteria for chronic periodontitis with type 2 DM group : All patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis according to the American Academy of periodontology 1999 criteria, with a >= 3mm mean clinical attachment loss and mean interproximal probing depth (IPD) >= 5mm on two non-adjacent sites with a confirmed diagnosis of Type 2 DM for >1 year, with no change in their diabetic treatment plan in the previous 2 months, with no major diabetic complication and not on insulin therapy. Inclusion criteria for chronic periodontitis without type 2 DM group : Subjects diagnosed with chronic periodontitis according to the American Academy of Periodontology 1999 criteria, with a >= 3mm mean clinical attachment loss and mean interproximal probing depth (IPD) >= 5mm on two non-adjacent sites with no systemic involvement. Inclusion criteria for healthy controls group : Subjects with Plaque index(PI) (PBI) < 1, mean probing depth(PD) <3mm.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) Subjects who have received any form of periodontal therapy, surgical or non-surgical within past 6 months. 2) Subjects who have received antibiotic and or anti-inflammatory therapy within the past 6 months. 3) Subjects wearing orthodontic or prosthetic appliances. 4) Immunologically and systemically compromised subjects other than those with Type 2 DM. 5) Subjects who give present or past history of drug abuse, smoking. 6) Subjects with a habit of mouth breathing. 5 7) Subjects with lip piercing, tongue piercing. 8) Physically debilitated and mentally retarded subjects. 9) Pregnant women and lactating mothers.
