Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation for at least three days or more admitted in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care teaching hospital (AIIMS, New Delhi) Patients who have been receiving mechanical ventilation for less than 12 hours before recruitment will be included in this study
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients suffering from neuromuscular diseases 2. Use of neuromuscular blockade to facilitate mechanical ventilation 3. BMI less than 18.5kg/m2 4. Obesity (BMI more than 30kg/m2) 5. Severe ARDS (as per Berlin definition) 6. Previous chest wall surgery 7. Pregnancy 8. History of mechanical ventilation in the past 3 months
