Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All cases of liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension with esophageal/ gastric/ esophago-gastric varices with or without previous episodes of bleeding

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1 Non-variceal causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding 2 Patients on PPI or other drugs that reduce acid output in the last 6 weeks 3 Patients who have received H.pylori eradication in past 3 months 4 Patients not fit for endoscopy

1. Prevalence of H.pylori infection in patients with esophageal varices due to liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension 2. To correlate the prevalence of H.pyloriwith the incidence of bleeding/rebleeding from esophageal varices and encephalopathy in patients of cirrhosis with portal hypertension Timepoint: 18 months

MeasureTime frame
1. To correlate the site of bleeding in case of liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension with H.pylori infection 2. To determine the association of pepsinogen I & II and pepsinogen I/II ratio with variceal bleeding and H.pylori infection Timepoint: 18 months
