Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Receiving mechanical ventilation for at least 24 hours

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Neuromuscular disorders/spinal cord injury above lumbar region 2. Upper airway obstruction/ tracheostomy/ anatomical obstruction of lower airways 3. Diaphragmatic hernia or palsy 4. Congenital cyanotic heart disease 5. Chronically ventilated patients ( >3 weeks) 6. Primary pulmonary hypertension 7. Significantly decreased lung capacity

MeasureTime frame
Duration of mechanical ventilation in both groupsTimepoint: Start of ventilation (day of intubation) to extubation.

Extubation failure: Patient requiring reintubation or unplanned non invasive ventilation within 48 hours of extubationTimepoint: Extubation to 48 hours post extubation.
