Intervention1: Etomidate: 0.3mg/kg single dose intravenously Control Intervention1: Thiopentone sodium: 5mg/kg single dose intravenously

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1.Undergoing surgery under General Anaesthesia 2.Duration of Surgery <2 hours

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient refusal 2. Anticipated difficult intubation (Mallampati grade III / IV) 3. Emergency surgical procedures 4. Patients with any systemic disease 5. H/O allergy to any drugs 6. H/O steroid therapy within last 6 months 7. Surgery lasting > 2 hours

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Serum Cortisol LevelsTimepoint: 1. 0 hours- Baseline value in the morning (Preoperative) 2. 4 hours after induction 3. 24 hours after induction (Postoperative)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1) Hemodynamic parameters - Heart rate (HR), systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) 2) ECG, SpO2 and EtCO2 will be continuously monitored 3) Any side effects Timepoint: 1. Before induction (baseline) 2. After induction (0 min) 3. After intubation (5 min) 4. Thereafter every 15 minutes till the end of the surgery.
