Intervention1: Melatonin: Oral melatonin tablet 6 mg (two tablets of 3 mg each), administered 120 min before surgery Control Intervention1: Placebo: Vitamin D3 tablet (2 tablets), administered 120 min

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients belonging to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status Grade I and II. Age 15- 45 years of either gender. Surgery requiring general anaesthesia for duration longer than 30 min

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with history of diabetes, hypertension, psychiatric illness, intake of antipsychotics, sedatives, anxiolytics and antiepileptic drugs, sleep disorders, obesity and drug allergy. Patients with anticipated difficult intubation and those requiring more than one attempt or more than 20 s for laryngoscopy will be excluded from the study. The pregnant and lactating females will also be excluded from the study.

Premedication with 6 mg melatonin administered orally 120 min before induction of anaesthesia is effective for providing haemodynamic stability at the time of laryngoscopy and intubation during induction of general anaethesia. Melatonin reduces the dose of propofol required for induction of anaesthesia. Timepoint: ONE YEAR
