Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The subjects who can fulfill the following conditions will be included in the study: (1) Normal healthy volunteers with age an range from 18 to 45 (2) Male subjects alone will be studied as cognitive task performance has been shown to vary with the phases of the menstrual cycle3 (3) All subjects who have six months experience of the practice of yoga (4) Willingness to participate in the trial. The regularity of yoga practice would be based on self-reporting of the participants as well as consultations with the meditation teacher (guru) (v) Apart from their prior experience of yoga, participants would be given a one month orientation program of pranayama under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The following criteria will be used to exclude volunteers from the trial: (1) The presence of cognitive or neurological disorders, based on a medical history and routine clinical examination. In addition the following three tests would be used: a. Evidence of identifiable cognitive impairment: Cognitive functioning will be assessed using the WAIS-III. Persons with scores lower than 80 for full scale IQ will be excluded from further participation. b. The presence of a behavioral/psychological disorder: the presence of behavioral/psychological impairments will be assessed using the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R). Subjects with significant deviations (exceeding one standard deviation) on these instruments will be excluded from the study. (2) Intake of medication, which is known to influence cognitive or autonomic functions. (3) Smoking or alcoholism which may influence cognitive functions, sensory and motor variables.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. Cognitive Tasks: Attention and Working memory-Visual N- Back Task. 2. Cerebral Auto-regulation: Cerebral blood flow (CBF), 4.Heart rate variability (HRV), Timepoint: All assessments will be done on following time points. Day1 to Day 4 with randomized breathing practice session and control session.
