Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1)Admission to medical high dependency unit or general ICU. 2)All patients admitted to medical high dependency unit or general ICU who have central venous line (subclavian or Internal Jugular veins) and an arterial line are included in this study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) less than 18 yrs old or pregnant, 2) Hepatitis B/C are present, 3) Neutropenia due to causes other than sepsis,

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The goal is to enroll patients prior to resuscitate and ultimately, those patients who do develop high â??PCO2gap will form the study group and those patients who have low â??PCO2gap will serve as the controls.Timepoint: 24 hours

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Mortality rates with high â??PCO2 will be comparable with the other mortality predicting models like APACHE II.Timepoint: within 24 hours of ICU admission
