Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Critically ill children admitted with severe sepsis in pediatric intensive care unit

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Children with chest tube with an active air leak or bronchopleural fistula, significant leak in the ventilator circuit or endotracheal tube (leak of >10% as significant), children requiring FiO2 >60% or those on high frequency oscillatory ventilation will be excluded

MeasureTime frame
To describe the energy expenditure in children with severe sepsis admitted to pediatric intensive care unitTimepoint: Patients will be enrolled within 48 hours of ICU admission and indirect calorimetry will be done for a duration of 30 minutes daily for a period of 7 days

MeasureTime frame
1.To determine nitrogen balance using 24 hour urinary nitrogen method in children undergoing indirect calorimetry 2.To ascertain the relationship between measured energy expenditure and clinical severity as measured by PRISM III scoreTimepoint: For the duration of indirect calorimetry measurements
