Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients diagnosed with depression using DSM-IV criteria and additionally confirmed using M.I.N.I (Mini international neuropsychiatric interview). Patients should not have been exposed to anti-depressants in last 6 weeks.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Pregnant and lactating women Patients with normal vitamin D levels by assay(Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D >= 50 nmol/L) People with serious medical illness including cardiovascular, renal and hepatic diseases Patients already diagnosed as chronic kidney disease. People who have used vitamin D or other nutritional supplements in last 3 months Patients with clinical manifestations of vitamin D deficiency. Patients taking any other medication which can interfere with vitamin D levels.
