moderate intensity training: Treadmill walking: 3 sessions per week
each 30 min duration
moderate intensity (60% HRR) Intervention2: low volume
high intensity training: Treadmill walking: 3 sessions per week
vigorous intensity (80% HRR) Intervention3: High volume
moderate intensity training: Treadmill walking: 5 sessions per week

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Sedentary defined as not exercising more than 20 minutes on 3 or more days a week 2. Diabetes diagnosis > 1 year. 3. Already receiving oral anti-diabetic medications but have HbA1c levels 6.5-10% 4. Able to walk continuously for at least 20 min and climb one flight of stairs unaided without stopping

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. BMI > 43kg/m2 2. Subjects on exogenous insulin 3. Retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy 4. Inflammatory and other conditions potentially associated with altered cytokine regulation 5. Autoimmune diseases 6. Hypothyroidism 7. Osteoporosis 8. Liver impairment 9. Renal insufficiency (creatinine levels > 2.0 mg/dl) 10. Diagnosed cardiovascular disease 11. Recent onset of cardiac-origin symptoms 12. Been prescribed a very low caloric diet (less than 1000 kcal/day) or drugs for the treatment of obesity 13. Orthopaedic problems limiting physical activity 14. Those already doing intensive physical activity > 2 h/week.
