Intervention1: CALORIE RESTRICTED DIET: BALANCED DIET PROVIDING 600 CAL/DAY. THIS WILL BE GIVEN BY DIETICIANS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF DIETITICS AT JIPMER HOSPITAL.THIS IS FOR A DURATION OF 1 WEEK OF HOSP

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus more than eighteen years old with Body Mass Index more than 23 kg/sq.meter. 2. Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) less than 9%.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients having or had coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular accident, eGFR less than 60ml/min, liver transaminases(AST and ALT) more than two times the upper limit of normal. 2. Those with history of or presently having gall stone disease. 3. Those with other general medical illness. 4. Currently on or immediately requiring insulin treatment.

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Primary Objective: To evaluate the extent of glycemic control that can be achieved by weight loss attained by calorie restriction. Timepoint: 12 WEEKS

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary Objective: To see whether the initial glycemic reduction was maintained at 12 weeks. To study the changes in lipid profile due to the weight reduction achieved at 12 weeks. To determine whether weight loss through dietary restriction is a feasible intervention Timepoint: 12 WEEKS
