Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients aged 18 to 70 years, undergoing elective thoracotomy for lung surgeries like wedge resection, lobectomy, pneumonectomy or resection of intrathoracic tumors will be included in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria 1. Congestive heart failure. 2. NYHA IV 3. Allergy to amide local anesthetics or dexmedetomidine 4. Any contraindication to paravertebral block or patient refusal for paravertebral block.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. Intraoperative anaesthetic drug requirement.Timepoint: 1. Intraoperative anesthetic drug requirement will be measured every 5mins from the start of surgery till the end of surgery.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Adequacy of postoperative pain relief (by Visual Analogue Score). 2. Post operative sedation. 3. Incidence of post thoracotomy pain syndrome. Timepoint: 1 and 2 at 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 hrs. 3rd three months after surgery
