Intervention1: Nutritional counseling plus 10 grams of a standardized food preparation of green leafy vegetable (coriander, curry or mint leaves)supplement: Thirty two mothers in the intervention arm

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Women between 18 and 40 years of age 2.Women with less than 4 pregnancies 3.Those with no pregnancy related complications are recruited into the study 4. Women with no history of hypertension, gestational diabetes or diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, tuberculosis, epilepsy, jaundice, thyroid disease, asthma are recruited into the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Women below 18 years of age and above 40 years of age with 4 or more pregnancies and with complications during pregnancy are excluded. In addition, those with history of hypertension, gestational diabetes or diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, tuberculosis, epilepsy, jaundice, thyroid disease, asthma are excluded.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. Quantification of the amount of breast milk output 2.Total vitamin A content of breast milk (infants total vitamin A intake) will be determined. Timepoint: 2 times in 4 years

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The birth weight and other anthropometric variables will be compared between the two groups. Change in serum retinol will be examined in relation to plasma concentration of CRP. Correlation between maternal serum retinol and iron and zinc status at both time points will be examined. Correlation of serum retinol with breast milk vitamin A one month post partum will also be done.Timepoint: 4years
