Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: • Children between ages 2 months to 5 years of age • Admitted to JIPMER pediatrics ward • With cough or respiratory difficulty with respiratory rate of 50 or more for 2 months to 1 year and 40 or more for 1-5 years children and >30 after that age with either a documented fever or chest in drawing. • OR a diagnosis of pneumonia based on chest examination by physician • OR a diagnosis of pneumonia based on chest radiograph

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Cases of tuberculosis (pulmonary), bronchial asthma • Treatment with Vit D during last 1 month • Congenital malformations of lungs • Known Immunodeficiency, HIV infection • Cases of urolithiasis or nephrolithiasis or nephrocalcinosis Cases of chronic liver disease

To compare the duration of hospital stay in children up to 5 years with community acquired severe LRI between those supplemented with vitamin D and those without.Timepoint: At the time of discharge from hospital
