Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Systemically healthy patients diagnosed with generalised or localised chronic periodontitis More than three natural teeth each quadrant Probing pocket depth >= 5 mm in a minimum of one site each in two quadrants of the same arch Radiographic evidence of bone loss in sites with probing pocket depth >5 mm. Those willing to participate in the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of antibiotics in last 6 months History of periodontal therapy in last 6 months Psychological disorders Aggressive periodontitis Current smokers Immunocompromised patient Pregnant and lactating females Blood disorders Any other contraindication for periodontal surgery Diabetes Any other systemic disorders

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Reduction in inflammation of periodontal tissues as measured by bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss and gingival recession is expected to be significantly more in green tea catechin site compared to the placebo groupTimepoint: reevaluation at 11/2,3,6,9 months

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Decrease in the need for surgical treatment in the test sites. Expression of MMP 9 in green tea catechin administered site is expected to be less compared to the expression in control site. Radiographic bone fill in green tea catechin administered pockets is expected to be more than the pockets in control site Timepoint: Decrease in the need for surgical treatment in the test sites after 11/2 months Expression of MMP 9 in test and control sites assessed at the time of surgery after 11/2 months Radiographic bone fill in test and control sites after 9 months
