Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Children of 1 month to 12 years of age presenting to pediatric emergency with pneumonia will act as cases. Pneumonia will be defined as World Health Organization (WHO) criteria29 i.e. presence of tachypnea (respiratory rate of more than 60, more than 50 and more than 40 per minute in children upto two months of age, between 2 month to 12 months and between 1 year to five years of age respectively) with or without chest retractions. In children above 5 years of age, respiratory rate of more than 30 per minute will be considered tachypnea.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Children with asthma and tuberculosis will be excluded from study.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. Vitamin D levels in children with pneumonia. 2. To compare vitamin D levels with children without pneumonia.Timepoint: Sample for Vitamin D will be taken at presentation to hospital.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Correlate of vitamin D levels with outcome of pneumonia.Timepoint: At final outcome of patient-discharge or death.
