Interventions

Intervention1: IRON SUPPLEMENTATION: oral ferrous sulfate 200mg(60mg elemental iron) twice daily (standard iron supplementation) PLUS T. ascorbic acid 250 mg twice daily FOR 6 MONTHS

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: CASES:Females of age 18-60 years with diffuse hair loss (CTE and/or FPHL) CONTROLS:Unaware of increased hair shedding or changes in hair quality or quantity during the past one year

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: CASES: 1.Patients with patchy and scarring alopecia 2.Patients with thyroid disease, hyperandrogenism, malignancies, connective tissue disorders, anemia of chronic disease and systemic diseases known to cause hair loss 3.Patients on drugs, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, irradiation and physical or chemical hair treatments implicated in hair loss 4.Patients who are or had been pregnant or lactating within the previous 12 months 5.History of operation and conditions causing pathological acute or chronic blood loss 6.Patients who were currently taking iron supplements (excluding multi-vitamins with iron in usual amounts of 10-20mg/d) or giving history of intolerance to oral iron. 7.Patients with history or family history of hemochromatosis CONTROLS: 1.Current pregnancy. 2.Unwillingness to give consent.
