Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The severely decayed primary mandibular second molar with more than two carious surfaces was the selection criteria and thus all these primary molars included were indicated for treatment with full coverage restoration e.g. stainless steel crowns; and had atleast 2/3rd of root length present as evaluated on periapical radiograph.In case of bilateral severely decayed primary second molars, the tooth with a lower amount of sound tooth structure was selected for the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Children with known systemic disease mental disability or abnormal para-functional habits like bruxism were not included in the study. The primary molars with missing antagonist, mobility, sinus, abscess or tenderness were also not included.

MeasureTime frame
To determine whether indirect composite restorations/onlays fabricated from direct composites are equally effective as stainless steel crowns in severely decayed primary molars in terms of anatomical and functional rehabilitation.Timepoint: baseline(one week postcementation), 3 months, 6 months and 12 months

MeasureTime frame
To evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy i.e. marginal integrity, anatomical form, development of secondary caries, gingival health of teeth restored with indirect composite restorations/onlays with that of stainless steel crowns when used for rehabilitation of severely decayed primary molarsTimepoint: evaluated at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, 12months using Modified FDI criterion for evaluating indirect restorations;To compare patient’s and parent’s acceptability in terms of appearance of i) indirect composite restorations/onlays and ii) stainless steel crowns.Timepoint: Evaluated at baseline and 3 months with Likert Scale and then at 6 months using specially prepared questionaire;To study the chair side treatment time required for indirect composite restorations/onlays and stainless steel crowns for rehabilitation of severely decayed primary molars.Timepoint: Recorded as chair side and lab time using stop watch
