Intervention1: early oral feeding: oral sips of water at 30cc per hour then progressing gradually to normal diet as tolerated Control Intervention1: traditional feeding: oral sips will be started once

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All consecutive patients undergoing elective open bowel surgeries in the Department of Surgery, JIPMER between September 2011 to July 2013.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Emergency bowel surgeries 2. Laparoscopic bowel surgeries 3. Patients not fit for starting oral feeding e.g.: patients on ventilator, unconscious patients, etc. 4. Patients undergoing feeding procedures like feeding jejunostomy, etc
