Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All children less than 5 years of age All subjects must satisfy All the following criteria at the study entry: Hospital/community (sentinel network) based prospective recruitment: Study will recruit children aged younger than 5 years of age with any of the following clinical syndromes: pneumonia with radiographic evidence or WHO criteria (Ref: WHO. Respiratory infections in children : case management in small hospitals in developing countries (WHO/ARI/90.5). Geneva:WHO), Clinically suspected meningitis or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) suggestive of bacterial meningitis; and fever at atleast 38 degree centigrade for 2 days or less, with suspected bacterial infection due to S pneumoniae

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient/guardian unwilling or unable to written informed consent to participate in the study. 2. Any other significant disease or disorder which, in the opinion of the investigator, may either put the subject at risk because of participation in the study, or may influence the result of the study, or subjects ability to participate in the study. 3. Subjects having previously participated in the study.
