Brief summary

To improve health literacy, it is important to develop resources that are easily accessible and simple to understand, that assist adults of all ages to improve their health. Successful Ageing does not occur once a person reaches age 65. To achieve Successful Ageing, it is essential to lead a healthy life throughout adulthood and this MOOC is designed to assist with that. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Successful Ageing MOOC in improving health literacy in adults 18 years and over using a wait-list randomised controlled trial. The successful ageing MOOC has 8 modules that will take around an hour each to complete over 8 weeks. At four time points we will measure each participants' health literacy to see if the MOOC helps to improve it or not.

Interventions

Completion of the 'Successful Ageing' Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). This MOOC is an 8 module online resource co-designed which included consumers (65+ years), health professionals, allied health students and policy makers. The modules were initially developed based on prior successful ageing research and goal setting for older adults (DOI: 10.1093/geront/gnae102; DOI: 10.1186/s12877-024-05017-x) and then feedback (both written and verbal over Teams) was provided by the consumer cohort above at a time that suited each consumer. As the modules evolved the consumers were privy to the changes and given further opportunity to provide feedback. The MOOC has been developed by the Curtin EdX team. The MOOC includes 8 modules: 1. Social connection 2. Mental wellbeing 3. Physical wellbeing 4. Physical health 5. Cognition 6. Financial stability 7. Independence 8. Enjoyment/Positivity Each module includes text, videos and online material on each topic, and a short optional quiz at the end. Each module takes no longer than an hour and will be available for up to 8 weeks. All 8 modules are available as soon as the participant can access the MOOC. The modules are completed in order and the participant moves to the next once the former is completed. A feasibility study has recently been completed September 2026 and the results are being analysed (ACTRN12626000371392). The MOOC is delivered online and participants can log in anytime/anywhere to access it once they have enrolled in the study. They will have access to the MOOC for 8 weeks.
