HeartPath+: A single site effectiveness/implementation feasibility study to test the co-designed HeartPath+ website for patients with coronary heart disease

HeartPath+ website is a a digital educational and transition of care resource co-designed with consumers/ lived experience investigators for cardiac patients presenting with a coronary heart disease. The HeartPath+ website is looking to provide information and support to patients in the early stages after experiencing a coronary heart event. This website was co-designed by consumers and family members, in three groups of consumers across those who spoke English, Mandarin and Russian. We used experience-based co-design to run co-design workshops and analysed data using the Health Literacy Model. In total we ran six English workshops, two in Mandarin and two in Russian. A content analysis was conducted which guided main content on the website. Every participant was then able to review the draft website and provide further feedback and opt in to user testing. Randomisation will occur at the ward level. One out of two wards will receive the intervention. All patients on this ward will receive access to the digital intervention during their hospital stay. This will be in addition to usual care. The HeartPath+ website will cover topics that are commonly asked in the earlier stages of recovery after a coronary heart event such as mental health/cardiac blues, eating styles/ habits, gentle exercises and medication. The website will be available in English with key sections (ie. Cardiac rehabilitation information, diet and mental health – as requested by consumers) translated into Mandarin and Russian. Content will be written with the ability for some sections to be printed out. Short videos with the lead researcher (Dr Susie Cartledge) and lived experienced consumers (in both Mandarin and Russian) will also be features on the website. Participants will be able to access the website through their own personal device. A link can be sent to either their mobile device or email address. Ward specific devices (such as an iPad or tablet) will also be made available. The HeartPath+ website will be introduced to the participants by a registered nurse looking after them or with a research staff member. Participants who consent to taking part in the research project will have data collected at baseline (during hospital stay) and 90 days follow up (post hospital stay). They will complete questionnaires at both timepoints and have basic but limited data analytics on the frequency and duration of use of the HeartPath+ website. Questionnaires will evaluate on whether the HeartPath+ will empower and assist participants in actively managing their heart health (primary effectiveness outcome, designated by consumers).
