Brief summary

The trial aims to assess the associations between the personality trait Extraversion and preferences for social physical activity (“we-exercise”) versus solitary physical activity (“me-exercise”), and between Extraversion and changes in affective responses in social physical activity versus solitary physical activity. The research question underpinning this trial is "Does the level of person-environment fit in facet Gregariousness moderate the relationship between moderate intensity exercise and affect?" It is hypothesised that person-environment fit will moderate the relationship between moderate intensity exercise and affect.

Interventions

Participants will be asked to complete the Research Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form (RPIS and CF), Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System (APSS) and Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and confirm their age, prior to attending the pre-intervention session. Once study eligibility has been confirmed, participants will be contacted to schedule their pre-intervention session to be completed 1-1 with the study research assistant. The pre-intervention will comprise the following activities (approx. duration 45-minutes), occurring approx. 1 week from intervention commencement: -Completion of the International Personality Inventory Pool (IPIP-NEO-120) to measure personality -Completion of the Affective Exercise Experiences questionnaire (AFFEXX) to measure affective views, attitudes and experiences with exercise -Measurement of participant height and weight -Training participants on how to use the Polar H10 heart rate monitors, Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale and Feeling Scale. (FS). -3-minutes exercise on the treadmill. Participants will engage in 3-minutes of treadmill walking at a warm-up speed of 3.2 km/h. This will allow participants to get used to the treadmill, practice using the FS and RPE measures. Participants will be assigned to complete two exercise conditions, with random assignment for the order of conditions: -Group (socially stimulating) exercise -Individual (socially unstimulating) exercise The group exercise condition involves individuals exercising in groups of three under instruction from a registered fitness professional (research assistant). Both exercise conditions involve exercising for 10-minutes total at a moderate intensity of 64-76% of Maximum Heart Rate. The individual exercise condition involves exercising individually under instruction from a registered fitness professional (research assistant). The timing and intensity of the exercise is the same in both conditions. Each individual will participate in the group and individual exercise once each only. Each exercise session will be aimed to be completed approximately one week apart. As such, the washout period is one week. The only exercise completed in each session is walking, jogging and running on the treadmill.
