Brief summary

Between 60-80 18–24-year-old nicotine users living in South Australia will be recruited through 4 avenues: paid social media advertising, organic social media advertising, community groups and snowball recruitment. Eligible individuals will be invited to self-select into 1 of the 4 available nicotine quit-support interventions: financial incentives, text-based support, Quitline or self-directed quitting. Follow-ups will occur at 4-weeks with primary outcomes regarding the feasibility of recruitment streams and participant preference of intervention. Interviews with interested participants will follow.

Interventions

Participants will self-select in one of the 4 available interventions for a 4-week intervention period: Quitline referral: An online Quitline referral will be made by study staff on behalf of the participant. Quitline will then contact the participant to schedule their first phone counselling session. Participants may engage with Quitline as many times as desired, with phone calls typically lasting between 5-20mins, Quitline counsellors may provide support for quitting through various strategi

Participants will self-select in one of the 4 available interventions for a 4-week intervention period: Quitline referral: An online Quitline referral will be made by study staff on behalf of the participant. Quitline will then contact the participant to schedule their first phone counselling session. Participants may engage with Quitline as many times as desired, with phone calls typically lasting between 5-20mins, Quitline counsellors may provide support for quitting through various strategies, including education for craving management, goal-setting and tailoring a quit-plan to the caller's needs. Participants will self-report the number of Quitline sessions in which they participated at their 4-week follow-up. Financial incentives: 2-weeks post study enrolment, a survey will be digitally sent to participants in this arm, requiring them to self-report their nicotine abstinence status. If they report abstinence, they will be required to biochemically verify with a saliva cotinine test; participants will choose for the test to either be posted and completed over video call with researchers, or completed in-person with researchers at the designated University campus. If the test verifies their abstinence, they will receive a $30 supermarket voucher. If they report that they are still using nicotine, or the test does not verify abstinence, they will not receive a voucher. At the 4-week follow-up, participants will receive $50 for verified abstinence and completing the survey, otherwise will receive $20 for completing the follow-up survey (in-line with other intervention arms) without achieving abstinence. Text-based counselling: Participants will interact with the designated number and enroll with the text-based cessation support program which features interactive and automated, tailored texts. Texts will be sent over a 4-week period and will be tailored to the participant's chosen quit-date. Texts will be sent an average of 3 times per week, and will vary in content depending on proximity to quit-date eg texts sent pre-quit date will provide motivational content and goal-setting, texts sent soon after quit-date will be focused on craving management strategies and reminders of goals, texts sent weeks after quit-date will celebrate quit success and maintenance of abstinence. Participants also have the option to send keywords to receive support for specific needs eg cravings, motivation etc, and may reset their quit-date at any stage. Self-directed quitting: Participants are instructed to undergo a self-directed quit attempt for the duration of the study that does not use any of the included interventions. Participants may seek any form of quit-support that is not included within the 3 intervention arms. 15-20 participants will be recruited for post-intervention interviews. The 4-week follow-up survey will include an opt-in selection for interviews; the first 20 participants to opt-in will be included. If recruitment does not reach minimum requirements through this method, researchers will contact participants directly to complete recruitment.
