Brief summary
DietAR is a novel dietary assessment tool, developed by researchers at the University of Melbourne, that uses advanced image analysis and 3-dimensional reconstruction techniques to assist with estimating food portions and nutritional information. This pilot study will recruit 25 adults with type 1 diabetes in a randomised crossover study to evaluate how accurately DietAR estimates food portions and carbohydrate content, and how users experience the app in a real-world setting. Participants will attend three visits to the university, consume standardised test meals, and provide feedback on their experience using the app. The primary outcome is the accuracy of carbohydrate estimation, while secondary outcomes include user experience and app usability assessed through validated scales. By incorporating co-design principles, this study aims to evaluate how well DietAR works in real-world settings and gather insights to improve the app for regular use by people with type 1 diabetes.
Interventions
Participants will attend an individual training session with a nutritionist at the Human Nutrition Research Facility at the University of Melbourne. This training session (duration:0.5-1 hour) will focus on educating participants on how to use the DietAR app. DietAR is a research-only dietary assessment tool developed by researchers at the University of Melbourne. DietAR provides automatic food identification and portion sizes estimations from 3D reconstruction using AR and deep-learning language models, removing the need for manual input by the user. In addition to becoming familiar with the app during the training session, participants will receive written instructional materials for continued guidance. Each participant will receive a unique six-digit access key for secure access to the DietAR app for a 14-day period. They will also be provided with a meal pack containing three test meals, based on rice, cereal or wheat-based ingredients (with alternatives available upon request). During this two-week intervention, participants will be instructed to use the app to record all food and drink consumed for five days, spending approximately 5-10 minutes per meal to record food items. Three of the recorded days must involve the consumption of a test meal (one per day). The five days of food logging may occur at any time during the 14-day intervention period, provided that the three test meal days are included. Participants will not be told the nutritional composition of the test meals and will need to use the app to assess nutritional information. The app provides comprehensive nutritional data, including estimated food amounts, nutritional analysis for specific foods, and total daily dietary intake. Adherence to the intervention will be monitored through analytics of the app to track frequency and amount of app use. Participants will have a one-week washout between the intervention and control periods.

Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Eligibility will be based on: age (18-65 years), HbA1c (less than or equal to 10%), clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes for more than or equal to 12 months, and currently using insulin therapy (open-loop continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion or multiple daily injections) with treatment regimen reviewed by a health professional in the previous 3 months.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria include: pregnancy, a HbA1c>10%, a BMI>35 kg/m^2, highly active (moderate intensity physical activity > 300min/week) or a history of a severe hypoglycaemic episode (requiring assistance) within the previous three months
