Brief summary
This feasibility study is aimed at testing the feasibility and acceptability of the ‘You-can-do-it: Successful Ageing’ Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The MOOC has been developed at Curtin University in collaborations with researchers from Monash University, City University of New York and Boise State University. It was co-designed with partner organisations and consumers (including older adults and allied health students from Curtin University). This feasibility study will be followed by a wait-list randomised controlled trial where health literacy and ageism will be evaluated pre and post MOOC completion.
Interventions
Completion of the 'Successful Ageing' Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). This MOOC is an 8 module online resource co-designed which included consumers (65+ years), health professionals, allied health students and policy makers. The modules were initially developed based on prior successful ageing research and goal setting for older adults (DOI: 10.1093/geront/gnae102; DOI: 10.1186/s12877-024-05017-x) and then feedback (both written and verbal over Teams) was provided by the consumer cohort above at a time that suited each consumer. As the modules evolved the consumers were privy to the changes and given further opportunity to provide feedback. The MOOC is currently being developed by the Curtin EdX team. The MOOC includes 8 modules: 1. Social connection 2. Mental wellbeing 3. Physical wellbeing 4. Physical health 5. Cognition 6. Financial stability 7. Independence 8. Enjoyment/Positivity Each module will include text, videos and online material on each topic, some of the modules will have short activities included also. Each module is expected to take no longer than an hour and will be available for up to 8 weeks. Participants completing each module will be asked to provide feedback at the end of each module and also complete a pre and post survey on health literacy and ageism. It will be possible to track how many people started the MOOC, which modules they completed, how long they took as part of the feasibility data. Participants will also be given the opportunity to participate in an interview after they have completed the MOOC and surveys to provide further more in-depth detail of their experiences in completing the MOOC. The interviews will be semi-structured and led by an interview guide of questions, however based on the answers further questions outside the interview guide may be asked to gain greater understanding and depth. The interviews will be conducted by a Research Officer and Research Fellow both with extensive experience in conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews, It is expected the interviews will take no longer than 30 minutes however if required there is scope to go longer. The interviews will be conducted either face-to-face or over Teams and will be audio-recorded. If on Teams the recording and transcription option will be utilised and we will use the Curtin University Teams channel. If in person, an audio recorder will be used to record the interviews.
