Brief summary
Primary aim of the study is to ascertain whether cytomegalovirus DNA (i.e., CMV reactivation) is present in blood of asymptomatic patients with end-stage kidney disease on hemodialysis.
Interventions
Patients with end-stage kindey disease on treatment with chronic intermittent hemodialysis will be observed for 1 month. At baseline, patients' characteristics will be assessed with a structured live questionnaire (~20 minutes), revision of medical records, hemodialysis report, and baseline blood analysis (biochemistry, full blood count, cytomegalorivus-specific IgG, cytomegalovirus-specific T-cell response). Included individuals will be followed for one month: blood will be collected before dialysis two times per week (2nd, 3rd, and 4th week), and the presence of any detectable CMV DNA in blood will be noted.

Inclusion criteria
prevalent adult patients with end-stage kidney disease undergoing chronic hemodialysis
Exclusion criteria
Hemodialysis treatment less than 3 months Presence of symptoms or signs of acute infectious disease (e.g., viral infection or recent antibiotic therapy) Autoimmune disease including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis Patients with residual diuresis and active nephrotic syndrome Monoclonal gammopathies Active malignant disease Undergoing immunosuppressive therapy History of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment or blood transfusion in the past 6 months
