Brief summary
The study aims to determine the effect of age on heart structure and function in Maori. Our aim is to gather data about heart health of older Maori, and their whanau, from a co-designed marae-based study rather than from hospital admission or mortality data, where most of our information regarding Cardiovascular (CV) health in Maori is currently obtained.
Interventions
Collect relevant clinical data, medical history in relation to heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors, and currently used medications Collect clinical and medication data from Ministry of Health (MoH) administrative records, general practitioner and the MoH PHARMS database for medication records Collect a blood sample to allow measurement of CVD biomarkers Take blood pressure and heart rate measurements, echocardiograph (ECG), handheld grip test, walk test, frailty assessment and body composition analysis Data and samples will be collected by registered clinical staff (nurses/doctors) from Christchurch Hospital. Body composition will be measured using Tanita Body Composition scales. The anticipated time needed to complete the assessments is up to two hours per participant. Measurements are taken once only at the time of enrolment. Participants will attend their marae for scheduled enrolment appointments. Information collected in the first data collection will be directly from participants during in-person interviews and the completion of the Te Tatauranga Manawa / Maori Heart Health Survey. Participants will be asked to consent for the researchers to collect hospital and medication data from Manatu Hauora / Ministry of Health administrative records, the participant's GP, and the Manatu Hauora PHARMS database for medication records.
