Brief summary

The study hypothesis is that implementation of a nursing program in hospital to reduce noise and interruptions overnight will improve patient's sleep. To investigate the effect of a nursing program to reduce noise and operational interruptions (measurement of vital signs, administration of medications) overnight on a cardiorespiratory ward in an Australian tertiary hospital. Observational study before and after implementation of nursing program. 1. Baseline data collection hospital ward- noise levels overnight, patient sleep duration and quality. 2. Data collection hospital ward after implementation of nursing program- noise levels overnight, patient sleep duration and quality.

Interventions

To investigate the effect of a nursing intervention program that reduces noise and operational interruptions overnight for non-ICU patients admitted on a cardiorespiratory ward in an Australian tertiary hospital. The structured nursing intervention program utilises behavioural change techniques to reduce noise and interruptions overnight by omitting measurement of routine vital sign measurements and medication administration between 23:00 and 07:30 unless clinically indicated by the treating tea

To investigate the effect of a nursing intervention program that reduces noise and operational interruptions overnight for non-ICU patients admitted on a cardiorespiratory ward in an Australian tertiary hospital. The structured nursing intervention program utilises behavioural change techniques to reduce noise and interruptions overnight by omitting measurement of routine vital sign measurements and medication administration between 23:00 and 07:30 unless clinically indicated by the treating team. The intervention program will be delivered by specialist nurses based on implementation science techniques. An implementation plan has been formulated following a survey of ward nursing staff to identify barriers and enablers to behaviour change. Training will include education sessions to reduce medication administration and measurement of vital signs overnight whilst providing peer (via nursing unit educators) and organisational support (from nursing unit managers). It is anticipated the nursing program will be implemented over a 1-month period. Adherence will be assessed by measuring the number of operational interruptions on the electronic medical record pre and post the nursing program intervention (see outcome measures section).

Inclusion criteria

All adult patients admitted to the 10 designated sleep monitoring beds on the cardiorespiratory ward (ward 2.2) at Box Hill Hospital, Eastern Health, Melbourne. Only patients who are admitted for at least 2 nights will be included in the study,

Exclusion criteria

Intellectual disability that would prevent them from following the study protocol
