Brief summary

The aims of this study were to investigate whether children with probable DCD would improve their motor skills, health-related physical fitness, and physical activity after receiving 8-week combined motor skill and physical fitness training, as well as the effects at 8-week follow-up. Outcome measures included the selected subtests of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2), Weight-Length Index (WLI), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), sit and reach, one-minute sit-ups, and level of physical activity and were examined at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 8-week follow-up. We hypothesized significant improvement in all outcomes after intervention and the effect could be maintained.

Interventions

40-minute combined motor skill and physical fitness training twice a week for 8 weeks in children with probable developmental coordination disorder (DCD) aged 6 to 11 years. 1. Examples of motor skill exercise include: ball skills (dribbling, passing and catching, kicking and shooting the ball); balance (single-leg hopping, single-leg standing passing and catching, single-leg hopping over an obstacle); strength and coordination (hopscotch, jumping over obstacles, single-leg zigzag hopping within squares); agility (5-meter shuttle run, 20-m face-to-face sprint to retrieve the ball, jump rope, short-distance sprint) Examples of physical fitness exercise include: aerobic exercise (figure-eight cone jogging, paired dribbling chase, one-on-one soccer duel) All exercises were administered at a group of 3-5 at school and were supervised by a physiotherapist. The intensity of exercise ranges from 3 - 8 METs as indicated in previous literature. (Reference: Ozemek, C., Bonikowske, A., Christle, J., & Gallo, P. (2025). Inclusion criteria

(1) six to eleven years old; (2) percentile rank less than 15 Movement Assessment Battery for Children, 2nd Edition (MABC-2); and (3) written consent was obtained from the children and their legal guardians

Exclusion criteria

(1) the presence of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or degenerative diseases (American Psychological Association, 2013); (2) chronic illnesses that severely affect the ability to participate in physical activity training; and (3) has undergone significant medical treatments affecting physical activity in the past six months.
