Brief summary

This study aims to see if a special education program led by a pharmacist can improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of teenage schoolgirls in Nepal regarding Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets. IFA tablets are important to prevent anemia, which is common in this group. Schools will be randomly chosen to either receive the new education program or continue with their usual health lessons. We will compare the two groups to see if the pharmacist-led program makes a difference.

Interventions

Arm 1 (Intervention): After obtaining the ethical approval, the data collection will be stepping wise process which is based on literature from similar studies conducted previously. 1. Baseline data measurement: For each group, a self-administered, structured questionnaire will be used to collect demographic data and baseline KAP. 2. Baseline data measurement: For each group, a self-administered, structured questionnaire will be used to collect demographic data and baseline KAP. 2. Educational Intervention (EI) on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding the use of iron and folic acid tablet: It is consisting of face-to-face lecture, and distribution of education materials (leaflets and pamphlets). The EI will be given in phase wise manner 1. Face to face lecture: At the first meeting, a structure face to face lecture will be given around 30-45 minutes to the intervention group about fundamental knowledge and theory on iron and folic acid tablets and also will be address about anemia, nutritional deficiencies and their manifestations. 2. Distribution of educational materials (leaflets and pamphlets): During the first meeting, a prepared leaflets and pamphlets regarding brief about use of iron and folic acid tablet, their benefits in health will be provided to adolescent schoolgirls for quick reference and as tool for later use to remind lecture, key step on use of iron and folic acid tablets. There is no already prepared leaflets and pamphlets, it will be prepared by the principle investigator from reference materials for easy to understand and long-term retention of knowledge. Leaflets and Pamphlets will be use after validation of content from experts. 3. Post assessment: At the second and third meeting, at 7 days and 30 days apart respectively, re-administration of same KAP questionnaire will be done to assess the impact of pharmacy led educational intervention on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding use of iron and folic acid tablets. It will assess the just KAP only but not medication adherence.

Inclusion criteria

1. Adolescent schoolgirls currently enrolled in grades 8, 9 and 10 in a selected public school in Mathagadhi Rural Municipality.

Exclusion criteria

Known medical condition that contraindicates Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation including adolescent school girls with thalassemia major, hemochromatosis or known severe allergy to IFA Severe illness or cognitive disability adolescent school girls that would prevent comprehension of the intervention or participation in data collection.
