Brief summary
The study hypothesis is that removing overhead announcements in hospital will improve patient's sleep. To investigate the effect of removing overhead announcements on a cardiorespiratory ward in an Australian tertiary hospital. Observational study before and after removal of overhead announcements being implemented as part of hospital policy. 1. Baseline (Phase I): Data collection hospital ward- noise levels overnight, patient sleep duration and quality. 2. Phase II: Data collection hospital ward after removal overhead announcements- noise levels overnight, patient sleep duration and quality.
Interventions
Phase 1 observational- 2 months data collection. Phase 2 removal of overhead announcements for medical emergencies in hospital- 2 months data collection. The overhead announcement system will be replaced by a paging and messaging service directly to clinicians for medical emergency (MET) calls. A weekly log of overhead hospital announcements will be collected for Phase 1 and Phase 2. The removal of overhead announcements is occurring hospital-wide for all patients as part of a separate quality improvement process so the study design is observational (not interventional).

Inclusion criteria
All adult patients admitted to the 10 designated sleep monitoring beds on the cardiorespiratory ward (ward 2.2) at Box Hill Hospital, Eastern Health, Melbourne. Only patients who are admitted for at least 2 nights will be included in the study,
Exclusion criteria
intellectual disability that would prevent them from following the study protocol
