Delivering a lung cancer screening pathway co-designed with Maori Providers

This is a mixed (quantitative and qualitative) methods prospective cohort study including people offered lung cancer screening and an evaluation of participant/whanau and Maori Provider staff experience. Participants are invited by participating Maori Providers either opportunistically at an appointment for another reason, or at a community event, or after a systematic search of Provider records and a mail out or telephone contact. Their eligibility is checked via a search of their medical records, with consent. The participants undergo a verbal risk assessment, either face to face or over the telephone. The assessment uses the PLCOm2020 risk assessment tool. This conversation and assessment usually takes between 1o and 20 minutes. It is followed, if the participant is eligible, by a single low dose CT scan, delivered by a qualified CT technician at Canopy Cancer Care, Palmerston North. The scan would usually be within a week or two of the risk assessment, and is arranged at a time to suit the participant. The scan appointment usually takes around 15 minutes. All participant interactions are logged in a bespoke IT system for the study, which will be reviewed regularly by the study project manager.
