This study investigates whether adding a gel containing a naturally occurring molecule that helps with wound healing, hyaluronic acid (HA), can improve treatment outcomes for people with an infection around dental implants that causes gum inflammation and bone loss (peri-implantitis). The hypothesis is that the additional use of the gel will improve clinical outcomes.

Interventions

This study investigates whether adding a gel containing a naturally occurring molecule that helps with wound healing, hyaluronic acid (HA), improves treatment outcomes for people with an infection around dental implants that causes gum inflammation and bone loss (peri-implantitis). Dental patients with peri-implantitis will be recruited. Half will have the HA, in the form of a gel, 0.5ml, placed under the gum around the implant after cleaning by the treating clinician. Inclusion criteria

Patients with dental implants that have been diagnosed with peri-implantitis

Exclusion criteria

Radiotherapy, recent antibiotic use, smoking and pregnancy
