Brief summary
Many athletes and gym users take supplements like caffeine to boost energy and performance. Caffeine is well known to have performance benefits like improved strength, power and alertness. Meanwhile, theobromine, a relative of caffeine, is under researched. Theobromine is a natural compound found in tea, chocolate, and commonly used in pre-workout formulas. It works similarly to caffeine but lasts longer in the body. The effects of theobromine on performance are not well known. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the separate effects of caffeine and theobromine on muscle activation, power output, and peak force production in recreationally, resistance trained men.
Interventions
Interventions: The interventions will be randomly allocated using block randomisation to ensure equal number of participants take each intervention during their first trial. Participants will take theobromine as a single 400mg dose, as powder in opaque gel capsules. These will be consumed in the lab under the supervision of the research team members. Gel capsules will be prepared by a member of the research team. A wash out of at least 48 hours will be used between trials. Exercise tests: A member of the research team will oversee the exercise tests used as the primary measures for the study. Participants will perform three squat jumps, countermovement jumps and isometric midthigh pulls before, and 30 minutes and 60 minutes after consuming each intervention.

Inclusion criteria
Participants will be included if they are a healthy male, aged 18-40 years, have 6 months to 2 years of resistance training experience, moderate caffeine intake (1.00-5.99 mg/kg/day), and no health issues that prevent jumping or lower body resistance exercises. Participants will be excluded if they have an intolerance to caffeine or low caffeine intake.
Exclusion criteria
Intolerance to caffeine, greater or lower than moderate caffeine intake, have an injury or health condition that may be made worse by lower body exercise, or that stops them from participating fully in the study.
