Brief summary

We hypothesise that the consumption of native herbal tea will moderate the blood glucose response after eating, and long-term consumption will reduce inflammation and improve overall wellness. The proposed study will be a randomised, parallel, clinical intervention study. Interventions will include one of two native herbal tea formulations, or a water placebo. The study duration will be a total of 43 days. Day 0 and Day 43 will measure the acute effect of the interventions. Days 1 to 42 will measure the long-term effect of the interventions. The primary outcome measures will be the acute effect on postprandial blood glucose response and the long-term effect on inflammatory markers and HbA1c. The secondary outcome measure will be the long-term effect on blood insulin and overall wellness.

Interventions

This is a six week, randomised, parallel study. Participants will consume one of two native herbal teas, or a control treatment (water). There are two components to this study, acute and long-term. The acute component involves consuming the allocated treatment with Weetbix as a meal. The long-term component involves taking the allocated treatment as a tea/drink every day for six weeks (Days 1 to 42). Participants will be required to drink 4 cups of tea per day, prepared in the same way as for for the acute component. Participants will stay on the same allocated intervention for both components of the study. Participants will return unused native herbal tea at the end of the study to measure compliance.

Inclusion criteria

An individual of any sex, aged 18-65 years with pre-diabetes (HbA1c 41-49 mmol/mol)

Exclusion criteria

Have any of the following: (i) blood borne diseases (e.g. hepatitis), (ii) are taking medication that affects the properties of blood (e.g. blood clotting), (iii) have a chronic illness (e.g. cancer) Pregnant, planning to get pregnant in the near future, or breast feeding Have a known hypersensitivity or intolerance to wheat products Screening blood test results outside of pre-diabetic range Smoke or vape
