Brief summary
This implementation project ‘Whanake te Kura (Flourishing Pepi & Whanau): Nga Pepi Raurau’ reflects the importance of supporting child growth and development over time. The intervention involves kaimahi delivering Nga Pepi Raurau (pepi developmental support packages and wrap-around whanau support) to nurture pepi and hapu whanau affected by methamphetamine. We will use both observational and mixed-methods approaches to understand whether this is an appropriate way of engaging whanau. This includes looking at how often whanau engage with the intervention, gathering demographic and quantitative data, and conducting interviews with whanau, kaimahi and other stakeholders. These interviews will help us assess whanau experiences, and the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention. The project brings together whanau, Iwi, community, NGOs, Te Whatu Ora and researchers to explore ways of enhancing early and ongoing positive child development.
Interventions
Exposure to Nga pepi raurau (intervention) to support development in pepi and tamariki. Nga pepi raurau contain activities (such as toys, poi, activities) that are provided to the whanau in konihi I te konihi (face to face) interactions with kaimahi (ie health workers from Enabled a community service provider) who are trained to support development. Visits may include activities such as korero, play, discussion around development and social supports access. This will occur as part of kaimahi visits (which will be determined by the whanau as to frequency) over a 12 month period. The visits will take between 1-2hrs depending on what kaimahi and whanau need. These visits will be monitored via entering into Qualtrix software.
