This study aims to evaluate whether a Mother-Centered Infection Prevention (MCIP) Educational Program can help reduce infections among children receiving chemotherapy at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. The program involves five weekly education sessions for mothers, focusing on hygiene, infection prevention, and home care practices, along with informational materials and infection prevention kits. The study will compare mothers who receive this education with those who receive standard care. We hypothesize that mothers who participate in the MCIP program will show improved knowledge and practices, leading to fewer infection-related complications in their children.

Interventions

The intervention will consist of a structured Mother-Centered Infection Prevention (MCIP) Educational Program designed to enhance maternal knowledge and practices regarding infection prevention among caregivers of pediatric oncology patients. The intervention will consist of a structured Mother-Centered Infection Prevention (MCIP) Educational Program designed to enhance maternal knowledge and practices regarding infection prevention among caregivers of pediatric oncology patients. The program will include five weekly educational sessions conducted over five weeks, each lasting approximately 40–60 minutes. These sessions will be delivered by a trained pediatric oncology nurse with expertise in infection control and will take place in small groups within the pediatric oncology department to encourage interaction and discussion. The educational content will cover essential infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, and environmental cleaning; safe food handling and nutrition during chemotherapy; recognition of early signs and symptoms of infection and appropriate healthcare-seeking behavior; management of neutropenia and minimization of exposure to infectious sources; and maintenance of cleanliness of medical devices and home environments. Participants will receive information, education, and communication (IEC) materials specifically developed for this study, including culturally adapted visual leaflets and posters based on World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) infection prevention guidelines. Each participant will also be provided with an infection prevention kit containing essential hygiene and cleaning supplies such as hand sanitizer, liquid soap, face masks, disposable gloves, disinfectant solution, and a digital thermometer. Follow-up reinforcement visits will occur over three weeks after the final educational session, consisting of two visits, each lasting approximately 40–60 minutes. These visits, conducted by the same trained oncology nurse, will reinforce key infection prevention practices, assess maternal adherence, address implementation barriers, and provide refresher education using the IEC materials. The total participation period for each mother will last approximately eight weeks, including the five-week educational phase and the subsequent three-week follow-up reinforcement period.

Inclusion criteria

Mothers (primary female caregivers) of pediatric oncology patients receiving chemotherapy at the Pediatric Oncology Department, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. Children aged 0–16 years diagnosed with any type of malignancy and currently undergoing active treatment. Mothers who are able to read or understand Urdu (the language used for education and assessment). Mothers who provide written informed consent to participate in the study. Mothers who are available for all educational sessions and post-intervention assessments.

Exclusion criteria

Mothers of pediatric cancer patients who are critically ill, in end-of-life care, or admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU). Mothers of children with active severe infections at the time of enrollment. Mothers who have previously received formal infection prevention education within the past six months. Mothers who decline consent or are unwilling to participate in all sessions. Mothers with cognitive, hearing, or visual impairments that would interfere with participation or comprehension of educational material.
