Brief summary

To determine if arterial reflection measures can be used as a risk and monitoring tool for heart disease in Australians with chronic kidney disease. We hypothesise that arterial reflections measures are correlated with current heart disease risk measures.

Interventions

This study aims to identify the relationship between arterial reflection measures and CVD risk (via transthoracic echocardiography, TTE) in persons with CKD. This study will be conducted as a cross sectional study design. Participants active on the kidney transplant waitlist who are undergoing kidney transplant screening (n=15-20) will be invited to have their arterial stiffness measured at the time that they have a TTE. This study aims to identify the relationship between arterial reflection measures and CVD risk (via transthoracic echocardiography, TTE) in persons with CKD. This study will be conducted as a cross sectional study design. Participants active on the kidney transplant waitlist who are undergoing kidney transplant screening (n=15-20) will be invited to have their arterial stiffness measured at the time that they have a TTE. Participants’ left ventricular ejection fraction and pulmonary systolic pressure will be measured via TTE. (Queensland Kidney Transplant Service, Statewide Service: Kidney transplant (adult) guideline, 2023). Participants will be assessed after dialysis on the day of dialysis and will be asked to not take any cardiovascular altering medications the morning of the measurement days to avoid alteration of results. Participants’ TTE and arterial stiffness will be reassessed annually for four years as part of their regular kidney transplant screening protocol. Relationships between arterial reflection measures and left ventricular ejection fraction/pulmonary systolic pressure will be assessed via Spearman correlation analyses and changes over time in arterial reflection measures and coronary sinus flow will be assessed by Friedman’s test. This study will be collecting results (arterial stiffness and left ventricular ejection fraction/pulmonary systolic pressure) annually for four years as part of participants' standard kidney transplant screening protocol.

Inclusion criteria

Patients who are candidates for a kidney transplant and fulfil the following inclusion criteria will be invited to participate in the study (1) be between 18 and 65 years of age; (2) be English speaking; and (3) be active on the kidney transplant waitlist in the past 12 months or over the next 12 months from the commencement of the study.
