Brief summary

This project is a campaign called 'Brain Station' which will be launched as a mixed method quasi-experimental pre-post study taking place in multiple public locations. The primary aim is to empirically evaluate the impact of co-designed, culturally congruent dementia risk reduction public health campaign for ethnic communities on dementia risk. Secondary aims are to assess the impact of this campaign on ethnically diverse adults' dementia awareness and motivation. The project will recruit participants aged 18+ from English-speaking, Arabic, Chinese, and Vietnamese cultural backgrounds (N= 250 per group). Methods include a cross-sectional survey (baseline and 10-12 weeks post campaign), and qualitative interviews (n=60 (15 per language group), 10-12 weeks post campaign). This project will provide pilot data to scale our approach at a national and international level to support dementia prevention in culturally diverse communities.

Interventions

Brain Station is a lifestyle intervention targeting behaviour change for multiple dementia risk factors amongst culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Specific risk factors include physical inactivity, poor diet, social isolation and cognitive inactivity. Targeted individuals include Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese speaking adults and older adults. Brain Station is a lifestyle intervention targeting behaviour change for multiple dementia risk factors amongst culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Specific risk factors include physical inactivity, poor diet, social isolation and cognitive inactivity. Targeted individuals include Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese speaking adults and older adults. The intervention itself has been co-designed with culturally and linguistically diverse individuals from each target group and will involve the following: 1) Immersive face-to-face installation at a shopping centre resembling a "Brain Station" i.e. one stop on your way to better brain health in which participants will complete a 10-15 minute online survey to educate themselves about their personalised modifiable dementia risk and have the opportunity to speak to researchers about their brain health in their preferred language. 2) Culturally sensitive and translated resources and physical prompts provided in a Brain Station box to support behaviour change. -The physical items represent each targeted risk factor and include translated recipe cards with healthier alternatives of cutlurally relevant and popular recipes for diet; for physical activity, a pedometer; for cognitive stimulation, a puzzle and for social activity, suggestions for remaining socially active, local actvities and services available. Prospective participants will be recruited at the Brain Station installation at the shopping centre and participate in a 10-15 minute online survey at the installation which will provide them with their personalised brain health risk profile. They will then collect their Brain Station box (including physical items, educational resources) and take this home to participate in the suggested activities over the next 3 months. After that, they will complete the same 10-15 minute follow-up survey online which they will receive in a link via email. The installation will be set up at the shopping centre for 7 days. At the 3 month follow-up time point, N=60 (15 per language group) participants who provided consent to participate in an evaluation interview. Adherance to the intervention will be assessed at the 3-month mark by tracking retention and also through the evaluation interview to further explore the extent to which participants adhered to the program. During the interview participants will be asked to describe which items in the box they used, how frequently they used them as well as participation in other activities pertaining to the targeted dementia risk factors (e.g., their physical activity efforts (i.e. daily/weekly steps), dietary changes (i.e. recipes used), cognitive (i.e. puzzle and brain training) and social (i.e. frequency and type of socialising)
