Brief summary

This study explores how different body systems—like vision, vestibular function, heart rate, physical activity, and sleep—might influence recovery after a sports-related concussion. Researchers will assess how these functions respond to exercise and whether they relate to how long recovery takes. The study also looks at activity levels and sleep patterns in the first 4 weeks following injury. By combining these insights, the research aims to identify early signs that could predict slower recovery or increased risk of reinjury.

Interventions

All participants will have been exposed to mild traumatic brain injury. Participants involved in the study will attend a single testing session where they will undergo a range of outcome measurements which have potential to predict prolonged recovery. This testing session is part of the standard exercise tolerance testing that is undertaken at the host organisation. After the testing session, participants will complete regular questionnaires that measure symptom recovery over the next 8 weeks.

All participants will have been exposed to mild traumatic brain injury. Participants involved in the study will attend a single testing session where they will undergo a range of outcome measurements which have potential to predict prolonged recovery. This testing session is part of the standard exercise tolerance testing that is undertaken at the host organisation. After the testing session, participants will complete regular questionnaires that measure symptom recovery over the next 8 weeks. Participants will have the option of wearing a activity monitor for the first 4 weeks. Observational data includes: Exercise tolerance test results, vestibular and oculomotor test results, physiological data (HR, HRV), physical activity parameters, sleep parameters, symptom scores, return to sport timeframes, reinjury rates. The time burden for participants includes: initial physical testing session (50 minutes), Post Concussion Symptom Scale questionnaire (10 minutes, once weekly for 8 weeks), Perceived Recovery Scale (5 minutes, once weekly for 8 weeks), overall recovery question (1 minute, 3 times weekly for 8 weeks), reinjury questionnaire (10 minutes, once every 3 months for 1 year). Optional activity monitoring will require the participant to upload their data once per day for 4 weeks (1 minute). The overall duration of observation is 12 months.

Inclusion criteria

- Ongoing symptoms from a diagnosis of sport-related mild traumatic brain injury within the last 14 days - Undergoing standard assessment and rehabilitation within Axis Sports Medicine Concussion Service

Exclusion criteria

- Peripheral vestibular conditions such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) - Musculoskeletal or medical conditions that limit the ability to participate in testing (e.g., lower limb injury) - Pre-existing oculomotor or visual conditions not mitigated with wearing corrective glasses - Self-reported acute illness - Self-reported learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD or other processing disorders (due to needing to read letters in Hart Strings test)
